Marco teórico:  Notas sobre investigación en diseño e innovación (Monguet Ferruzca 2014) +
En este trabajo se responde a algunas preguntas centrales sobre Investigación en Diseño:

  • ¿Qué es y en qué estado se encuentra la Investigación en Diseño?
  • ¿Puede la Investigación en Diseño responder con fuerza e intensidad a las demandas de innovación de las empresas?
  • ¿Es necesario un espacio para el trabajo colaborativo en el ámbito de la Investigación en Diseño?

El trabajo expone y argumenta con profusión porque y como desde la Investigación en Diseño se pueden hacer aportaciones para responder a los grandes retos socio-económicos a los que nos enfrentamos actualmente:

  • La Investigación en Diseño puede contribuir notablemente a crear puestos de trabajo sostenibles intensivos en conocimiento.
  • La Investigación en Diseño favorece el diseño social responsable o de productos y servicios más asequibles.
  • La investigación en Diseño contribuye al acercamiento entre las universidades y las empresas en el contexto de la innovación.

La conexión oferta–demanda, en el campo de la investigación–innovación, no es fácil que se genere espontáneamente, si no se activan ciertos catalizadores que faciliten un enlace efectivo universidad, empresas y profesionales.   Así pues, la justificación y el sentido del proyecto IDID, presentado en este trabajo, se encuentran en la necesidad de promover la Investigación en Diseño como un factor clave para el desarrollo de los sectores industriales y de los servicios.
Esta propuesta aporta los elementos necesarios para la eventual activación de un espacio que acelere una comunidad de Investigación en Diseño capaz de asumir los retos que le corresponden.  La propuesta ha sido creada gracias a una participación amplia e interactiva de los agentes y de las personas de la comunidad de diseño local, y si bien el trabajo aquí presentado corresponde a las actividades de 2013, el resultado expuesto es fruto de tres años de trabajo.
Se propone finalmente una estructura operativa que basa su funcionamiento en un nuevo modelo de interfaz que, partiendo de la necesidad de trabajar con rigor científico, tenga como razón de ser la respuesta a las necesidades de las empresas y de la sociedad.
Este estudio pivota alrededor de las Escuelas de Diseño, entendiendo que las mismas son el activo clave del potencial de investigación en Diseño de la Región Metropolitana de Barcelona. Este colectivo lo integran unos 9.000 estudiantes  y más de 300 profesores a tiempo completo.

The growing complexity of the economy, globaliszation and competition in business models makes interaction between all assets of knowledge and creativity very relevant.  For this reason  promotion of activities that can help to develop a Design Research space,  should be considered as a priority.
The models of research have been evolving during the last years, the mode 2 concept was a first step to break the rigid scientific research paradigm, but in 10 years “it has been raining so much”. How many books are published daily? How often technical knowledge doubles? What is the limit of bandwith? If is true that a personal computer may surpass the computational capabilities of the whole human race in 2050, there is no doubt that lots of research work will be needed. Part of this research will be related with the connection of business challenges and technology with design, understood as a combination of culture, thinking  and management. +

 

Design Research: driver for innovation

design researchDesign may be an excellent link to connect knowledge production and companies. Difficulties to approach technological research with market are well known and are more significant when the size of the company is not large. Design research, intended to facilitate the connection between SME’s and technological research institutions, can provide useful insights and ideas to convert “design management & thinkling” in a channel for technology and knowledge transfer to firms.

TRH eSpasti

espasti2eSpasty, part of the TRH system, is a telemedicine tool to assess and follow the effect of botulinum toxin in patients with spasticity that causes walking disability. The model is based in recording and sending video  and the rating scales from home with the regularity established by the doctor.  The patient has access to videos that show how to perform the therapies that have been proven beneficial to optimize the effect of the toxin. | Working paper

Living Lab Research Landscape [R&i]

This work presents the results of an analysis and categorization of a set of papers about living labs published during 2006-2011. The aim was to build a deep understanding of the domain landscape of living lab research (D3LR) proposed in the past 1st. Living Lab Summer School held in Barcelona (Pallot et al., 2010). 817 papers were reviewed in order to try measuring the size of each research area proposed in the original D3LR based on published scientific papers contained in the ISI Web of Knowledge. They had to be related with design, users and Internet. They were also classified according to four possible subjects: artifacts, concepts, models and methodologies. Results of this study can be of interesting for those looking a research topic about living labs. It also outlines where living lab research is more needed and trends in this theme.

Desde hace unos años, diversas voces sugieren que el modelo actual de atención primaria en España ha alcanzado su madurez y que debería iniciar un nuevo replanteamiento. Un grupo de profesionales, procedentes de diversas disciplinas de conocimiento y con diversa experiencia profesional, abordan el reto de plantear cuáles deberían ser las líneas futuras de evolución.

eBlood

eBlood is a system for the blood transfusion process in hospitals, and  is  intended for the comparison between the classical transfusion process and a new process based on RFID.

The project has been developed by LAM-UPC, i2Cat, and doctors from Sant Pau and The Clinic hospitals of Barcelona thanks to a grant from the Catalan Health Department.

e-fer 2005-11. The platform e-fer stores a vast number of virtual cases of chronic wounds. Each case represents a thorough description of professional experiences, lived in a real context. The trainee is responsible for solving the cases presented, choosing the best diagnosis and treatment solutions. The system calculates the economical cost of the errors of the students. +

Vector Consensus

quinari vectorconsensusWeb 2.0 Participation has become a key strategy to take the right decisions in complex and multi-professional environments, and digital consensus tools allow the integration of costumers, users or employee’s points of view and interests.
The work of professor Monguet begun in 2006, and since then it has evolved trying tro contribute to the field of Real Time Delphi (RTD). Research is focused in the application of RTD in many fields and in combination with all kind of technologies. VAD (Virtaully Applied Delphi), was a former version of the model, that later became “Consensus”, defined as a system for the creation of tools and strategies to promote the collaborative creation of knowledge.

V.0. of Vector Consensus was born when Aguilá and Monguet were looking for a way to help companies to improve their Business Model. Under the direction of professor Monguet, Alfredo Gutierrez, in his doctorate practice, worked in the development of a web based model. Later on, the software tool has been improved gradually by the engineer Alex Trejo. Although this is not the first software version, it has opened the door to the discovery of a new kind of tools in RTD (Real Time Delphi).

A significant experimentation of the model was passible thanks to the research on Drivers of the Future Internet inside i2Cat, in a team formed JM Monguet, Miquel Ramirez and Alfredo Gutierrez.

The platform was designed at LAM UPC, to facilitate the collective knowledge management for a whole generation of latinamaerican nephrologists. The development and deployment of that system has been really a full experience, garnished with all dimensions of human behaviour. +

dRD

DRDThe project Dynamisation of Research in Design (dRD) aims at collaboration between companies and design schools based on the connection between design research and innovation. The model of research proposed and developed encourages the realisation of doctoral thesis in a context guided by the needs and demands of innovation coming from companies. dRD wants to contribute to the creation of an open work space, that may be lead and shared by all the institutions devoted to design promotion and education. dRD promoted the transfer of knowledge and techniques that may be applied on research projects where design is the main driver for innovation. The project was lead by BDIC, and has involved professors from EINA, ESDI, ESDAV, UPC and UB. +

Mental health training for primary care.

Cisma (2006-09) is a digital learning tool to train primary care doctors in interview abilities for mental health treatment. CISMA applies a strategy based on interactive video simulation. The process of interaction controlled the choices of students and the case study evolved according to decisions made by them. The students were allowed to see their own assessment in relation to the score of the general group. The progress through the course was conditioned to answer correctly, batteries of questions about the situation of patient in the doctor desk. + +p

The project was developed in a collaborative way by CAMFIC SJDSSM Hospital and UPC thanks to a grant of the Catalan Institute of Health.

 

disseny_Cat

The research in the design field began in 2006 with “Disseny_cat”, a project ordered by the Catalonian Government, whose objective was to draw an exhaustive map of the institutions involved in design in the region of Barcelona.
Following the nowadays trend of planning from local or national basis a policy to support and promote design harder within economy, the Government of Catalonia started a research to understand the real scope and potential of design infrastructure in the area. It aimed to value the structure and dynamics of local design industry and the whole work allows a diagnostic of the situation and to appreciate the real position of Barcelona as a town of reference in the international design scene.
A new methodology to interact with interviewed people has been created using a specific intranet to develop a public poll, see results and evaluate proposals in order to get a wide consensus both by actors and participants. As far as research’s aim was to catch the state of opinion about present situation, it has also been interesting the organizing of a poll, where questions were selected either by comparison with some policies adopted recently by other countries and looking at the changes arrived to design idea and practice through its adaptation to contemporary economy. +

Blended learning [R]

El objetivo del trabajo fue explorar el efecto que tiene el grado de presencia (blended learning) que se requiere de los estudiantes durante el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, sobre el rendimiento y el interés por la materia objeto de aprendizaje, utilizando como estrategia didáctica el método de casos de estudio, como una particularidad de el aprendizaje basado en problemas (problem based learning).
